Dear journal,
The Battle of Stalingrad was a grinding battle. I remember watching the Luftwaffe bombing house after house until the town was desecrated to a burnt crisp (Danzer, et al. 571). The Germans attacked our town of Stalingrad along with the Caucasus oil fields in order to provide a base of operations in which they could attack our country from three fronts (Phillips 1). This was a greuling battle. This battle lstarted in June 1942 when the Germans attacked Stalingrad and ended today when the Germans surrendered (Danzer,et al. 571). With the help of the rest of the red army, we were able to stop the German invasion in October, and eventually make them come to this. Before our reserves arrived, I watched in awe and fear as the German used stunning blitzkreig operations to capture two-thirds of the city (Laurie 1). So far, this battle is one of the most longest battles documented in history (Phillips 1). The other soldiers are alrady calling this as "the first great turning point in the war," while celebrating the victory (Danzer, et al. 571). The government really helped us out when winter arrived, as they rolled fresh tanks into Stalingrad and we launched a massive counterattack. Even though we outlasted the German offensive invasion, our casualties are massive. In total, we've already lost about 1.1 million men, and many others are injured (Danzer, et al. 571). We are planning to move westward towards the German front and help the Allies finally defeat Germany and stop Hitler.
